Quota Issues

Introduction
Each user has a limited amount of storage space on Uoregon.edu. Each user also has a limit on the number of files, regardless of their size. As of October, 2005, each user's default limit is 250MB of storage space and 5,000 files.

Managing Your Files
If you only use your account for email then see the information presented below. If you are creating and managing files (i.e. web pages) then you may need to go through your account to find and remove any files you are not using or those that are using up too much space. Due to the inherent danger present when deleting files, we prefer not to give you step by step instructions. Please visit our Help Desk for assistance if you need it. One of the more common reasons for someone goes over quota these days is digital pictures placed on a personal web page.

Managing Your Email
The basic concept behind managing your email is to delete messages that you have already dealt with. Unfortunately, it isn't always that simple. Uoregon.edu receives and stores your email. Depending on how you read your email, you are either working with the real message or a copy. What this means is that you might delete a message from within your email program that doesn't get deleted off the server. If you use Pine, then you can simply delete messages--they will be removed from the server. In fact, even if you don't normally use Pine, you can use it to delete mail from the server. If the program you use for email is listed below, click on the corresponding link for more specific details:

Windows Macintosh
Eudora Eudora
Outlook Express Outlook Express
Netscape Communicator Netscape Communicator

Checking Your Quota Progress

Advanced User Tip
You can also connect to the host via SSH and login with your account (email) username and password. Once connected type "quota -v" at the "%" prompt and then "logout" when done.
