Summary
Drive Letter Access (DLA) and RecordNow software can cause multiple problems
with McAfee VirusScan, including a failure to install correctly. This problem does not effect the most current versions of these programs. The solution involves either removing this software, or updating it to the most current version prior to Viruscan installation.
Details
If you have the old version of RecordNow or DLA, the McAfee installer will appear to freeze with an "Starting Framework Service" message. The McAfee antivirus software will install only partially. Add/Remove Programs will not list McAfee, and may be damaged even for other non-related programs.
The software packages DLA and RecordNow are CD burning software. These products have been sold by a series of companies, including IBM, Veritas and Sonic. This software has been included on some IBM Thinkpads and some HP Omnibook laptops and HP Pavillion desktop computers.
The problem manifests itself in a wide variety of ways. With VirusScan 8.0i, we have seen the installation process get stuck at the "Starting Services" phase of installation. McAfee reports a wide range of problems. See the McAfee KnowledgeBase article for a list.
Solutions
The UO McAfee Installer CD does not always detect the presence of these programs.
The best solution is to notice that this software exists on the computer before attempting to install VirusScan. If you do not need DLA and RecordNow, uninstall the programs using the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
If you wish to use DLA and RecordNow, update these programs before attempting to install VirusScan. We have provided links to these updates for your convenience:
