Antivirus Software
Introduction
The University of Oregon has purchased a site license for McAfee's
VirusScan®
Enterprise for Windows and Macintosh. This license allows us
to distribute this software free of charge to current UO students, faculty
and staff for use both at home and work. Too often we are called upon to help
users fix computers that are nearly useless due to spyware and virus infections.
We strongly recommend
that you install VirusScan® to
protect yourself before you
lose valuable time and data. Please install and run only one antivirus
product at a time.
Windows:
McAfee VirusScan® Enterprise 8.5i requires Windows 2000,
XP, 2003 or Vista for both desktops and servers.
System requirements:
- Pentium or Celeron processor running a minimum of 166MHz
- Minimum of 32MB of RAM (512MB or more recommended)
- Minimum 150MB free disk space
- Windows XP Home and Professional SP2, or
- Windows 2000 Professional SP3 or later
- Alert! Windows 95, 98 and ME users: Our experience has been that these computers are too old in most cases to be safely upgraded to our new antivirus software. The only real solution for these machines is outright replacement with a newer computer running Windows XP. Please do feel free to contact us for additional advice.
Macintosh:
- Mac OS X 10.3.9 and older: Use Virex® 7.7 with Patch 1.
- Mac OS X 10.4 and newer: Use VirusScan® 8.5
for Macintosh

McAfee VirusScan and Virex Issues
Macintosh:
- ERROR: An error occured while installing the update. The eUpdate
was not completed.
- The first thing to check is that the Virex or Viruscan application
is installed in the Applications folder. The McAfee Macintosh products
do not work properly when installed elsewhere.
- OS 10.3 users: Get
and install "Patch 1" for Virex 7.7. (on campus, or VPN
connection required). OS 10.4 users get
Viruscan 8.5 for Macintosh.
- Virex 7.7 users: There is a known conflict with
Allume Systems StuffIt 11.0. Workaround #1: Reinstall the default version
of StuffIT 8.02. For this reason it may be advisable to upgrade your
Macintosh to 10.4 or higher, and install Viruscan 8.5 for Macintosh.
The only other workaround involves manually updating definitions which
doesn't sound reasonable.
- In some cases it is necessary to uninstall, then re-install the product.
Our disk image package on "password.uoregon.edu/av" includes
the McAfee uninstall script
Windows:
- RecordNow and DLA Incompatibilty--Hanging
During Installation at "Starting Framework Service", or "Installing
Services."
- Wave Systems Embassy Trust Suite--VirusScan Enterprise
(VSE) 8.0i hangs during installation. An "Invalid Handle" message
is displayed afer a restart. Starting the McAfee McShield
service crashes explorer.exe, leaving the user hung at a background with
no objects. Workaround/Solution. (List
of Systems that
may come with this software)
- Omnipass software (typically included with finger-print
ID devices)--You must uninstall McAfee, create your profiles in Omnipass,
then re-install McAfee.
- After uninstalling Symantec's Norton AntiVirus (NAV),
I lose network connectivity.
Although this is not a McAfee problem, our UO McAfee Installer helps users
uninstall NAV. See
Cornell's site for more information. We
have software that can remedy this problem.
