NOTE: The University of Oregon's contract with Symantec expired on July 28, 2005. We now have a contract with McAfee to distribute VirusScan Enterprise (for Windows) and Virex (for Macintosh). For more information, see our McAfee page.
This web page will remain online for reference purposes.
Introduction
The University of Oregon maintains a site license for Symantec's Norton AntiVirus products for the Macintosh and Windows. This license allows us to distribute these packages free of charge to current UO students, faculty and staff for use both at home and work. Too often, we are called upon to help users who have already contracted a virus and subsequently lost data. We strongly recommend that you install Norton AntiVirus to protect yourself before you lose data.
Macintosh Users
Mac OS X (10.1.5 and later)
For MacOS X users, Symantec has released NAV
for Macintosh 9.0, which is a MacOS X-specific version. It requires MacOS
X 10.1.5 or newer, 128MB of RAM and 40MB of free hard drive space.
Mac OS (8 & 9)
The current version of Norton
AntiVirus for Macintosh is 7.0.2. This version requires MacOS 8.1 or higher,
and at least 24Mb of memory. See the "About This Computer..." under the Apple
menu to determine your system version and built-in memory if you do not know.
We also have the CDs available for checkout from the Documents Room (175 McKenzie
Hall). We have the PDF version of the manual online (which requires Acrobat
Reader). You can also download the products from our public domain server
CC Public Domain. From there, the software
can be found in the "Virus Software" folder.
Windows Users
There is very little difference between NAV 2002 and NAV 2004. Recommended versions include NAV 2002, 2003, and 2004. The only major difference between NAV 2002 and NAV 2003 is the ability to protect users of instant messaging programs. 2004 adds limited spyware detection. Upgrades don't always go smoothly, so if you don't use instant messaging and already have NAV 2002, then Microservices doesn't recommend upgrading.
Special Note to Windows 95/NT Users: Microcomputer services does not recommend upgrading NAV for Windows 95/NT. In many cases, the NAV software cannot be upgraded, and where it can it probably doesn't make sense to do so because it will slow your machine down.
Regarding Email Scanning: Microservices does not recommend the use of NAV's email protection feature as it cannot be used in conjunction with our SSL encryption requirement for email.
