Windows Duckware 2004 Software List

We produce the Duckware CD once a year, during the summer, for distribution throughout the academic year. As the year progresses, the software on Duckware becomes outdated. The list below indicates which programs have been updated and the importance of those updates. We recommend downloading the newer versions of these programs late in the academic year (May through August) rather than installing old versions from the Duckware CD.

Microservices Recommends, or "What's this Duckware CD Good For?"
We recommend a "standard" Duckware install. To perform a standard installation, insert the Duckware CD and click the "Next" button until the process is done.

The standard install includes FireFox, a web browser alternative to Internet Explorer (IE), Netscape and Mozilla. Firefox is much less susceptible to spyware than Internet Explorer. We also recommend Spybot Search and Destroy, a good antispyware program.

Other software to consider:

• Adobe Reader: In the old days you couldn't easily carry a document in software form to another location. You would need to make sure the person receiving the document has the same software and fonts to open it, manipulate it, and even to print it. Adobe created the most popular "portable document format" called PDF. What this means in practice is that someone can send you a file that you can read even if you don't have the software that created it. This is a "must have" program that's free to use.
• BurnAtOnce: If you have Windows XP, you already have a good built-in CD burning software package. If you have Windows 2000 or prior then no free-CD-burning-software was included. BurnAtOnce is free to use, and does the job nicely.
• OpenOffice: This program can create, edit, and manipulate files in the Microsoft Office file format. Further, it can save in the same format. It's a freely available "Office look-alike." This is great for simple projects (e.g. short papers or correspondence), and not so great for larger projects. For big projects we recommend you buy the real Microsoft Office.
• PDFCreator: Does as it says. Anything you can print, can become a PDF. Extremely useful tool. One example use would be if you purchase something online and want a copy of your receipt but do not wish to use paper. You can print to the virtual PDF printer, and either decide to print to paper at a later time or not at all.
• SSH.COM's Secure Shell: Part of our standard installation. Includes an excellent drag-and-drop graphical file transfer program for use with our hosts. As its name implies, SSH connections are encrypted.
• Thuderbird: Excellent email program, similar in design to Microsofts Outlook, but without many of the security vulnerabilities of Outlook. Check it out.
• VPN: Virtual Private Network software to encrypt your communications with our network. Allows your PC to appear to be transparently part of our local network which is useful for accessing otherwise domain restricted resources (think site licensed software and expanded academic index at the Library).

Upgrades
We encourage you need to keep all of your applications up-to-date to keep your PC secure. The applications marked with red (above are those that we know require an update for security reasons. This recommendation becomes even more important for any network related applications. At the same time, upgrades don't always go smoothly, so we ask you to start this process only when you have time.
