Duckware Description
Background Information
We produce a free CD-ROM for students, faculty and staff which serves as a distribution method for site-licensed and selected shareware and freeware software.
What is Duckware's purpose?
The purpose has changed over time. In the early days, the CD is was absolutely essential to get the software necessary to connect to the Internet. In modern time it serves as a distribution method for site-licensed antivirus software and site-specific software like VPN. The Duckware contains a set of recommended software that is free for UO folks to use.
Who is it for?
Duckware is available to current UO students, faculty and staff.
How do I use Duckware?
Load the CD into your CD-ROM drive. The CD autoplays if your computer has that
ability and it is enabled. This means that a window (actually a web browser)opens
immediately with an introduction to the CD including information about how to
use the disc. (Note: No files are copied to your machine to use this interface.)
What if I don't have a CD-ROM drive?
We no longer provide software for computers that lack a DVD or CD-ROM drive.
What is on the CD?
- Documentation The disc contains step by step instructions with pictures
to enable new users to connect the the UO network the first time (under the
"Internet" button).
- Web Browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox, FTP, SSH, Link for Web Email.
- Antivirus Software The UO maintains a site license for antivirus software contained on the disc.
- Drivers and Tools Various drivers for ethernet cards, Iomega Zip
etc.
I installed last year's Duckware and I am already Internet connected. Do I need
this year's?
No you don't need it. The Duckware can be used to upgrade software from prior years.
What can I do with the CD when I am finished with it?
The disk can be recycled at any of the distribution points. We prefer that
you give it back to us so we can give it to someone else if you no longer want
it.
