Configuring Outlook 2002 and 2003

  1. Start Outlook
  2. From the "Tools" menu, select "E-mail Accounts"
  3. Click the "Add a new e-mail account" button and click "Next >"
  4. Select either "POP" or "IMAP" and click "Next >" (What's the difference?)
  5. In the "User Information" section, enter your name and e-mail address
  6. In the "Server Information" section, enter your Incoming mail server as "pop.uoregon.edu" or "imap.uoregon.edu" depending on what you chose in step #4
  7. Enter "smtp.uoregon.edu" as the Outgoing mail server
  8. In the "Logon Information" section, enter your username (the portion of your email address to the left of the @ sign)
  9. Click the "More Settings..." button
  10. Click the "Advanced" tab
  11. Under "Incoming server", click the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" check box
  12. Under "Server Timeouts" move the slider to the right so that the timeout is between 2 and 3 minutes
  13. Click the "OK" button
  14. Click the "Next >" button
  15. Click the "Finish" button

How to enable SMTP Authentication

  1. Start Outlook
  2. From the "Tools" menu, select "E-mail Accounts"
  3. Make sure the button for "View or change existing e-mail accounts" is selected and click Next.
  4. Select your account and click "Change..."
  5. Click the "More Settings..." button
  6. Click the check box for "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"
  7. Click the "Log on using" button
  8. In the User Name box, enter the first part of your UOregon email address
  9. Click the Advanced tab
  10. Under the "Outgoing server (SMTP)" section, click the check box for "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
  11. In the box to the right of "Outgoing server (SMTP)" change the number there to 587.
  12. Click OK
  13. Click Next
  14. Click Finish

Outlook will now log you in when you attempt to send mail.
