Gladstone and Darkwing

Some of you have had long-term relationships with our servers Gladstone and Darkwing. For others, these two names hold little meaning. This page will explain what they were and where they went.

Gladstone and Darkwing were two Sun Solaris servers operated by Information Services for e-mail, web site and statistical work, among other functions. Undergraduates had accounts on Gladstone. Faculty, staff and graduate students had accounts on Darkwing. In 2005, they were replaced by a more powerful cluster of computers.

User accounts on Darkwing, Oregon and Gladstone were moved to this server cluster (in that order) during late 2004 and 2005. Since Gladstone and Darkwing are no longer in service, we have ceased using those names. All accounts are now on Uoregon.edu.

The new server cluster offers some advantages over the old Gladstone/Darkwing configuration:

Email sent to Darkwing and Gladstone addresses will be automatically delivered to the corresponding uoregon.edu account. No email forward is necessary.

For a more technical explanation of what has replaced Darkwing and Gladstone, see the Winter 2005 Computing News article, "The New Darkwing: A Briefing". This article was written while the project was underway, and the final results may differ from the details explained in this article. The underyling system architecture remains the same.
