Configuring Ethernet

Attach an Ethernet Cable
Plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet port. Plug the other end of the cable into a jack on the wall labelled "UO Ethernet." The head of an Ethernet cable looks like a standard phone jack, but it is slightly wider (RJ45). Click here if you don't have an Ethernet card installed yet.

Open the AppleTalk Control Panel
Click on the Apple Menu icon in the top left corner of the desktop. Hold down the mouse button and select Control Panels and locate the AppleTalk control panel. Highlight AppleTalk and release the mouse button.

Set Up AppleTalk

You can click and hold the mouse button with the pointer positioned over the current selection to see the drop-down options. Choose "Ethernet," then select the correct "Current zone." The correct current zone corresponds to your building or department name.

Click here if you do not have control panels called AppleTalk or TCP/IP.

Open the TCP/IP Control Panel

Choose connect via "Ethernet," and configure "Using DHCP Server."

Run the UO Network Applications Installer

Launch the UO Network Applications Installer from the Duckware CD-ROM or the Network Applications Installer diskette set. This will install Netscape, Eudora, Fetch, NCSA Telnet and other network applications on your computer.<

Start an Application

There should be no need to restart. Ethernet-connected Macintosh computers can make immediate use of the network. Click on the Apple Menu icon in the top left corner of the desktop. Hold down the mouse button and select the UOnet option and open any network application from this menu.
