VPN for Windows
Overview
For an explanation of Virtual Private Networks (VPN), please read our VPN
Overview document.
Installing the VPN client
The VPN installer is available in two ways:
- on our Duckware
CD, and
- via download from the web site https://licensed.uoregon.edu/vpn (recommended)
We recommend using the download if you have a fast network
connection. You will receive the most up-to-date version of the VPN software.
Using the VPN Software
- Select "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Cisco Systems
VPN Client" -> "VPN Dialer"
- Click "Connect"
- Enter your Computing Center email address in the username field (for instance:
jersmith@uoregon.edu).
- Enter the password for your email account.Click "OK"
- You should get a "Welcome" connection message. Click "OK"
- You are now connected, and can use network related applications.
When you wish to disconnect, find the padlock icon in the system tray (bottom
right corner of your monitor) and double-click on it. You will see a "Disconnect"
button in the window that appears; click on it to end your VPN session.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Third-party (non-Microsoft) firewall software may prevent web browsing
when connected via VPN. Configure your firewall software appropriately.
- Qwest DSL customers who use the Actiontec 1520 DSL modem need to enable
VPN passthrough. For directions, see Qwest's
documentation.
