Windows 98 Modem Configuration

Introduction

This document will guide you through the steps necessary to connect your home computer to the University of Oregon network and subsequently to the Internet. Each step is followed by a picture to clarify what you need to do.

In some cases you will not be able to follow a particular step because your computer lacks a component shown in that step. Should this occur, click on the additional steps icon () and we will guide you through that component's installation steps and return you to this document.

If Windows prompts you to restart, refuse that request, so that you can complete the steps outlined here with the least amount of interruption. Once these steps are complete, we may ask you to restart if it is necessary. You may also find that previewing and/or printing the steps out in advance will make the process easier to follow. You may be required to have the Windows 98 CD-ROM on hand to complete the tasks outlined here.

Find the icon on your desktop labelled "My Computer" and
double-click on it.

Creating a Connection Document

Windows creates documents to store information necessary to activate your network connection. This information includes the phone number you are dialing and your modem type. For many users, one document that connects to the University of Oregon is sufficient. Some purchase additional Internet service from commercial vendors like America Online or USWest. If you have more than one service (or more than one phone number to dial), then you will need to create seperate connection documents for each.

If you just got through the modem discovery process (begining of this document) you will automatically be prompted for a new connection document. If you already have a modem, but need the "UO" connection document then double-click on the "Make New Connection" icon inside the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.

You will be asked to name your connection document. Note that your modem brand name should appear. The example below shows a "SupraFAXModem 288" brand modem. The phone number for UO connectivity is 225-2200. The document name can be anything you like.
