Windows NT Modem Configuration

NOTE: Microcomputer Services and Microsoft no longer support Windows NT.

During this procedure Windows NT will prompt you to restart. Select "No" in each case until the instructions here indicate that you should restart. You may be required to have the Windows NT CD-ROM on hand to complete the tasks outlined here.

Double-click on "My Computer"

Double-click on Dial-Up Networking

You will be prompted to add a modem if you have not already done so.

You will usually see the found-modem window.

If you have not installed the dialup networking software, you will be prompted to do so.

Install PPP

Name the phone book entry. This can be any name.

Click the boxes shown below called "I am calling the Internet." And "Send my plain text password..."

Enter the correct phone number (225-2200).

Restart Your Computer

The primary installation is now complete. You should now Restart your computer to allow the changes and additions you made to take effect. When your computer has restarted, return to this page and continue with the next step.

Restart Windows NT by selecting "Shutdown" from the "Start" menu.

Dial Your Modem

If you have an external modem, attach it, and turn it on.

Click on the Dial-Up Networking file located within My Computer. Click on "Dial" to make your connection. The "More" button has several sub-menus that allow you to change settings that you have already entered in case you made a mistake.

Enter your UO e-mail address and password.

Connect window

You should see (and possibly hear) your modem connecting to the UOnet. You might not get in on your first try,especially during the busiest hours of the day (usually evenings).

Once connected, you can dismiss this dialog box by selecting "OK."

Note the small telephone icon on the bottom left of the screen. Clicking on it displays connection status and allows you to disconnect when you are done.

Start an Application

Once you have gone through all of the above steps you should be ready to start up an application. All UO Network Applications are located under the Network Applications folder found under the Start menu. In order to open Email, for example, you would click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of your desktop and then click on Program Files, Network Applications, Email, and finally "UO Web Email."
