Windows XP On-Campus (Ethernet)

Background

Windows XP is preconfigured for all of the standard networking protocols required to run the UO Network Applications. You should not be required to modify any setting in your Network control panel.

If you are running a version of Windows XP older than Service Pack 2, we strongly recommend you enable the built-in firewall software. If you have Service Pack 2 or newer installed skip to the Attach the Ethernet Cable step.

Enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)

Explanation: Enabling Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) denies connections initiated by external hosts on the internet. This provides you with a great deal of protection against current exploits and worms. It also can block certain network-related applications like Instant Messaging and IPTV. If you choose not to enabled ICF, please keep your computer up to date with "Windows Update" and apply all critical updates in a timely manner. Please also click on the "Settings" button on this window. Verify that everything there is un-checked. The list found under "Settings..." opens holes in the firewall and do not typically need to be set.

Attach the Ethernet Cable

Plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet card. Plug the other end of the cable into a jack on the wall labelled "UO Ethernet." The head of an Ethernet cable looks like a standard phone jack, but it's wider (RJ45). Click here if you don't have an Ethernet card installed yet.

If you wish to verify network connectivity, follow these steps:

Start an Application

Now you should be ready to start up an application. All UO Network Applications are located in the Network Applications section found under the Start menu. To open Email, for example, click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of your desktop, then Program Files, Network Applications, Email, and finally "UO Web Email."
