Eudora is a program that enables Macintosh users to route electronic mail directly to their desktops, rather than having to log in on a timesharing system to read and send e-mail. To use Eudora, you must have an account on a campus timesharing computer that supports POP (Post Office Protocol) service, such as DARKWING, GLADSTONE, or OREGON. Your Mac must be connected to UOnet, either directly (via a campus Localtalk or Ethernet network), or remotely, via ARA 2 or InterSLIP software. In addition, you must be running System 7.0, and have at least 500K RAM available on your hard drive to install Eudora. Before proceeding, check your Control Panels (under the Apple menu) to make sure MacTCP is installed.

*Installing and Running Eudora [Back to Top]

Install Eudora on your hard drive, as follows:

  1. Pull down the Apple menu and select the Chooser. Click the AppleShare icon, the UOnet AppleTalk zone, and the CC Public Domain file server. Then, click OK.

  2. Click the Guest button, then OK. Then select "CC Public Domain," and click OK once more. The CC Public Domain icon appears on your desktop. Open it, then open the Network Software and Mail Clients folders, in order.

  3. Drag the Eudora 1.5 icon to your hard drive.

To run Eudora, open your hard drive and click the Eudora icon twice.

*Setting Preferences [Back to Top]

Before using Eudora the first time, you'll need to set a few personal preferences. If you'd like some online coaching as you set preferences, click the question mark at the top right of your screen and select "Show Balloons."

Pull down the Special menu and select "Settings" to display the settings window. You'll see a scrollable set of icons to the left of the window. We suggest you leave settings that are already checked as they are. Here are four you'll likely want to personalize:

  1. Type your e-mail address in the POP Account box (e.g., username@oregon.uoregon.edu). Then type your full name in the "Real Name" box. This name is displayed in all the messages you send. Leave the "MacTCP" button selected.

  2. Select the "Hosts" icon and type the address whois@uoregon.edu in the Ph box. This enables you to use the Ph and Finger utilities when you need to locate unknown e-mail addresses and display other information about recipients.

  3. If you wish to have Eudora periodically check your In mailbox and notify you when new mail has arrived, click the Checking Mail icon. Select the number of minutes you'd like as a time interval between mail checks, and enter this number in the Minutes box.

  4. If you'd like Eudora to keep a copy of all the messages you send, scroll down to the Sending Mail icon, click it, and select "Keep Copies..." Copies are stored in your Out mailbox.

*Creating and Sending a Message [Back to Top]

To create and send new e-mail messages,

  1. Pull down the Message menu and click the New Message option.

  2. Enter the recipient's complete e-mail address at the To: prompt.

  3. Then, enter the subject of the message at the Subject: prompt.

  4. Move down to the message area with your mouse. Type your message and review it for accuracy. (If you need to move back up, use your mouse.)

  5. When you're finished, click Send to send it.

*Getting Your Mail [Back to Top]

Eudora automatically checks for new mail if you specified a time interval when setting preferences. When Eudora finds new mail for you, it announces its arrival with an audible rooster crow and a New Mail announcement box. Behind the box is a table that lists the messages in your In mailbox. Click a message once to select it and twice to display it.

You can also check your mail manually at any time by pulling down the File menu and clicking "Check Mail..." If you do not have any new mail, Eudora notifies you in a similar announcement box.

*Processing Your Messages [Back to Top]

The five basic things you can do with a message once you've read it are outlined below. In each case, the action pertains to the message you are currently reading, have just read, or have just selected.

Replying. If you want to reply to the message, pull down the Message menu and select "Reply." You'll see a new window, with the original sender's address in the To: field and the subject repeated. You'll also see the text of the message, with each line preceded by a ">". If you want to retain some or all of this text, press your down-arrow key before typing. You may edit the text, if you wish. Then, type your response below the message text and click "Send" when you're finished to dispatch the reply.

Forwarding. If you want to forward the message, pull down the Message menu and select "Forward." You'll see a window with your address entered at the From: prompt. Type the e-mail address of the person you are forwarding the message to at the To: prompt. Again, the original message text is included, with the ">" character at the beginning of each line. You can edit and add to this text, if you wish. Click "Send" when you're ready to forward the message.

Printing. To print the message on your local printer, pull down the "File" menu and select "Print..."

Storing. When new messages arrive, Eudora places them in your "In" mailbox. If you wish to set up some other mailboxes to store mail in, pull down the Windows menu, select "Mailboxes," and click the New button. Then name the mailbox(es). The name(s) are added to the Mailbox menu. (You're also offered the option to "Make it a folder," a folder being a collection of mailboxes. We suggest you avoid folders until you have more experience with Eudora.) Click "OK" when you're done naming mailboxes.

To place the current message in an alternate mailbox, pull down the "Transfer" menu and select the mailbox. To go to an alternate mailbox, pull down the "Mailbox" menu and select it.

Deleting. To delete the message, pull down the "Message" menu and select Delete. This temporarily moves the message to a mailbox called Trash. When you leave Eudora, the "Trash" mailbox is emptied. If you want to delete the message immediately, pull down the Special menu and select "Empty Trash."

*Leaving Eudora [Back to Top]

When you're finished using Eudora, pull down the "File" menu and click "Quit."

*Other Features of Eudora [Back to Top]

Eudora allows you to do many other things that are not discussed here. For example, you can

  • queue messages to send later, or all at once

  • redirect messages to other recipients

  • use Ph and Finger to locate unknown e-mail addresses and display other recipient information

  • reply to all of the senders of a message

  • send rejected messages again

  • create a "signature" for your messages

  • leave a copy of messages on the mail server

  • create nicknames for frequent correspondents

If you wish to learn about any of these features, or have other questions about Eudora, refer to the Eudora Version 1.5 Macintosh User Manual, in the Eudora folder on your hard drive. Click the document icon twice to expand it from its compressed form, then read it with Microsoft Word.

You can also display information about what the keys on your keyboard can do in Eudora by pulling down the the "?" menu at the right-hand side of the menu bar at the top of your screen and clicking "Modifiers & Keys."

Note: If you dial in to UOnet using either InterSLIP or ARA 2 remote-access software, the instructions given in this handout work fine. If you use another dial-in software package, you'll need to download the folder titled "Eudora by modem" from the CC Public Domain server and follow the instructions in the "Read Me" file.
