BANNER Forms Test Results |
|
[Back to the Macintosh to Windows Transition Page] Below we present some data gathered while testing the loading of some representative BANNER GUI forms on various Macintosh models. The first entry is for a Pentium II 266 Compaq computer. This can be used as a reference for the remaining Mac models. The first four (#1-4) forms loaded were approximately 100K in size. Form #5 was 400K, and form #6 was almost 1MB (1024K) in size. The form sizes appeared to be typical of forms used by various administrative groups at the UO. The numbers listed below each form represent the seconds it took to load that form. Please see the notes below this table for more explanation of some of the reported numbers
Notes: Machines which ran Speed Doubler appeared to gain about a 20 to 30 percent performance advantage over similar model Macs without Speed Doubler installed. Speed Doubler generally works without causing problems with other applications. You can purchase Speed Doubler for about $50 from many catalogs and stores. If you upgrade your System software and you already have Speed Doubler installed, then you will most likely need a new version of Speed Doubler. We saw a dramatic performance difference between different Macintosh models using the same processor upgrade card. The Macintosh 7600/132 showed much better results than the Macintosh 7500/100 when using an installed 604e/200 processor upgrade card. You can see this difference in the chart above. Compare the Macintosh 7600/132 against the Macintosh 7500/100 load times (5 vs. 8 seconds for the larger form). With minimal testing using Virtual PC 1.0, Virtual PC 2.0, and Soft Windows 5.0 we have found that SoftWindows 5.0 runs faster, but is considerably more difficult to install. Look to the main "Macintosh to Windows Transitions Pages" for more information on installing Virtual PC and SoftWindows coming soon. Finally, remember that this is a small sampling. The results are intended to give a general feeling for what you might expect from similar Macintosh models. If you are unsure of the type and/or speed of processor in your Macintosh model, you can contact Microcomputer Services for help. Call us at 346-4412 (Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm) or send email to microhelp@oregon.uoregon.edu and let us know what Macintosh model you are using. We can then tell you its processor type and speed.
