This document explains how to configure Windows NT so you can connect to UOnet via modem.

1) Double click on "My Computer"

2) Double click on Dial-Up Networking.

3) You will be prompted to add a modem if you have not already done so.

4) Click "Next" if NT correctly identifies your modem type, else click "Change..." to make an alternate selection.

5) If you have not installed the dialup networking software, you will be prompted to do so.

6) Give your dial-in connection a name. "UO" or "University of Oregon" might make sense.

7) Click the boxes shown below called "I am calling the Internet." And "Send my plain text password..."

8) Enter the correct phone number (346-6520).

9) You are ready to dial-in for the first time, click "Dial" to make your connection. The "More" button has several sub-menus that allow you to change settings that you have already entered in case you made a mistake.

10) Enter your modem account username and password. This is separate from your email username and password.

11) You should get a successful connection. Once connected, you can dismiss this dialog box by selecting "OK" then open your network application of choice. If you do not have any network applications, start by double-clicking "The Internet" icon on your desktop which is Microsoft's free world wide web browser. You may also install the UO Windows 95 Network Applications installer found on the Duckware CD-ROM or come by our office to copy these onto diskettes in 151 McKenzie Hall.

12) Note the small telephone icon on the farthest left bottom of screen. Clicking on it displays connection status and allows you to disconnect when you are done.

TROUBLESHOOTING: What if it doesn't work?

1) If the modem won't dial at all, go to the modem control panel and try adding your modem again. You might try overriding the auto-detect and manually selecting modem type or select a generic modem type, then enter a valid modem initialization string. For most modems, "at&f" is a valid method to set the modem to factory defaults.

Double-click on Modems.

Select "Properties" -- The example shows "Sportster" but you should have either your modem brand or a generic modem shown.

Click the "Connection" tab.

Click "Advanced...," then type "at&f" into the Extra Settings field.

Check the Network Control Panel, and make sure TCP/IP exists. You can configure TCP/IP directly by selecting its properties and typing the following into the DNS tab. Hostname should be your email address, not the example "jersmith" shown below.

, "Protocols," "TCP/IP Properties"
