InterPPP is a software package that allows you to connect to UOnet, the UO's computer network. The UO's InterPPP package comes with many popular Internet applications, such as Netscape and Eudora. This document describes how to install InterPPP and set it up to connect ot UOnet by modem.

A Special Note to Owners of Power Macintosh 7200s, 7500s, 8500s, or 9500s: Apple's Open Transport technology currently has some compatibility problems with InterPPP. We recommend that you use MacPPP for TCP/IP connectivity (available on the CC Public Domain server on UOnet), and ARA 2.01 if you need AppleTalk Capabilities.

*Requirements for Using InterPPP [Back to Top]

To run InterPPP, you'll need to have

  • a modem account, which give you access to UOnet when you connect by modem. See the handout, How to Get a Computing Account, to find out how to create one.

  • a Macintosh computer running system 7.0 or higher
  • a 14,400 bps or faster modem
  • 8MB of RAM (or 16MB for System 7.5.2 users)

External Modem users must be using a "High Speed Serial Cable." The Computing Center's downstairs reception sells these cables for $6 each. If you bought your modem at the Computing Center, you probably already have one.
If you use a PowerBook, make sure you have already installed the software that comes with your modem. You may be able to get the latest version of the modem software from the CC Public Domain Server.

*Obtaining the InterPPP Installer [Back to Top]

The InterPPP installer package is available on the CC Public Domain Server. If you have access to a networked Macintosh on campus you can download InterPPP as follows:

    1. Mount the CC Public Domain Server. See the document "Accessing the Macintosh CC Public Domain Server" for complete instructions.
    2. Open the Dialin Support folder, which is in the Network Software folder. The InterPPP folder contains the UO InterPPP Installer folder and an alias to the Network Applications folder.
    3. Drag the UO InterPPP Installer folder onto your Hard Disk.
    4. Double-click the Network Applications folder. When it opens, drag the four Installer files onto your Hard Disk.
    5. When the files have been copied, drag the CC Public Domain icon into the trash to dismount it.

If you cannot access the CC Public Domain Server, bring five high density disks to Room 202 of the Computing Center and a staff member will assist you in getting copies of the installer files. Make sure that you label your disks "InterPPP 1" and "Net Apps 1- 4," so you can keep track of the proper disk order when doing the installation.

*Installing InterPPP and other Network Software [Back to Top]

Installing the InterPPP package is an automated process that you start by double-clicking on the file "UO InterPPP Installer."

    To install the InterPPP package:

    1. Restart your computer while holding down the shift key until you see a message that says, "Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions are off."
    2. Double-click the UO InterPPP Installer folder. If you obtained the InterPPP package on diskettes, you must first insert the disk labeled InterPPP 1.
    3. Double-click "UO InterPPP Installer."
    4. Read the brief message in the Installer window and click Install.
    5. When the installation is complete, click the Restart button.
    6. If you obtained the InterPPP package on diskettes, insert the first "Net Apps" diskette.
    7. Double-click the Network Application Installer. Read the brief message, and click Continue.
    8. Insert the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th "Net Apps" diskettes when prompted. The installer places the following files and folders on your hard disk:

  • a Network Applications folder that includes: Netscape, Fetch, Eudora, Telnet, Newswatcher, various "helper" applications
  • a UOnet log-on document on your desktop called "InterPPP Start Here."
  • an InterPPP Dial folder in the Apple Menu Items folder ·
  • a MacTCP Control Panel, if one does not already exist
  • an Appletalk PPP option in the Network control panel
  • a MacTCP Prep file in your System folder
  • an InterPPP folder on the top level of your hard disk

*Doing the Preliminary Setup [Back to Top]

To use InterPPP you need to select the AppleTalk PPP connection in your Network control panel.
Note: Some Macintosh computers do not have a Network control panel installed. To install, use your original System disks, select "Custom Install," and install File Sharing (System 7.1 users) or Networking (System 7.5 users).
    To select Appletalk PPP:

    1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu and double-click on the Network control panel.
    2. Click once on the AppleTalk PPP icon to select it; then close the Network control panel.

Note: If you need to switch back to LocalTalk or EtherTalk to access your printer or other networked machines, open the Network control panel and select the appropriate AppleTalk connection. But remember, each time your want to use InterPPP, Appletalk PPP needs to be selected.

    *Configuring InterPPP [Back to Top]

Note: You need a valid modem account to log in on UOnet. See the document, "How to Get a Computing Account" to find out how to create one.

    1. Open the InterPPP application, which is in the InterPPP folder.

    2. Choose Open from the File menu.

    3. Locate the InterPPP Start Here document on your dekstop and open it. A dialogue box appears.

    4. Enter your modem account username (e.g., uo-jersmith) in the "name" field.

    5. Enter your network password in the "Password" field.

    6. Choose "Save" from the File menu to save the setup information you just entered.

From now on, when you want to log in on UOnet, you can just double-click on the UOnet logon document on your desktop or access it from your Apple menu.
Note: If other users have access to your computer, you may prefer to leave the password blank to prevent unwanted use of your account.

*Establishing a Connection [Back to Top]

Click Connect in the UONet log on box to dial in and make a connection to the campus network. You will see the following messages:

Status: [few seconds...] Status: [few seconds...] Status: Idle... Configuring modem... Negotiating... Connected.

When the "Status:" field says "connected," you have successfully established your connection and you are ready to use the applications located in your Network Applications folder. Each folder has "Read Me" document that explains how to use the application.

    *Troubleshooting InterPPP [Back to Top]

If you have trouble connecting to UOnet with InterPPP, we suggest you try the following steps to remedy your problem:

    1. If you have another modem application that is always reliable, try it to see if it works. If it does work, leave it and skip to step 3.

    2. If it does not work, check to make sure your modem's cable is attached to your Macintosh; check that the modem is connected to the phone jack. Turn your modem's power off and on, and restart your computer. Then open InterPPP again and try to connect.
    3. If your modem seems to dial correctly but cannot connect to UOnet, check to make sure you entered your modem account username and password correctly. Remember that your username must have the prefix uo-.
    4. Disable fax software, if you have it, and retry InterPPP.
    5. Choose Open CCL Script from the File menu. Open PPP UO Default Modem in the Extensions folder. Change the modem configuration line from ATZ/13 to AT&F/13, AT&F1/13, or AT&F2/13. If you know your modem's correct factory default setting, use that here instead.
