Email

Any email program that supports encryption (specifically SSL) will work with our servers. The configuration requires you to check a box usually labeled"connect using SSL" or something to that effect. For specific email program configuration information, see our email program configuration page.

Here are several ways to retrieve email securely:

• UO Web Email
• Thunderbird
• Mac OS X Mail
• Pine via secure shell (SSH)

What about Outlook and Outlook Express?
Unfortunately, Microsoft products are the target of many viruses and security exploits. Due to the number of vulnerabilities and issues with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express we do not recommend their use. If you choose to use Outlook anyway, use the "Windows Update" item under your start menu to download "critical updates" to help stay on top of these issues.

SSH stands for Secure SHell. A shell is a command prompt window that is text-based. Users type commands and the system responds. Its note quite a pretty as a graphical interface but it can be every bit as effective.

SSH Secure Shell (for Windows) and MacSSH (for Mac OS 8 & 9) are included on the Duckware CD-ROM. Terminal that comes standard with all versions of Mac OS X. For information on how to use these programs, see our SSH instructions web page.

Some users prefer secure shell and pine to read all their email for fast, no-frills computing. To give pine a try, connect with secure shell and type "pine" at the "%" or "$" prompt. The first year SSH was the default install on Duckware was 2000.

Mac OS 8 & 9 Note: In the MacSSH program, users must check the box "Use SSH v2" on the login screen. Duckware 2001 includes both MacSSH and Nifty Telnet SSH v1 programs. Further, NiftyTelnet requires that the "Protocol" drop-down menu be set for SSH (i.e. "ssh - blowfish"), however this setting can be saved with the "Save As" button on the same screen for faster future access.

Windows users can use the SFTP portion of the SSH Secure Shell program mentioned above.

For Mac OS X we recommend Fugu (available on Duckware or by download).

We have not found any free SFTP programs for Mac OS 8 & 9. The option we suggest is MacSFTP, which costs $25 per license. NiftyTelnet included with Duckware 2000 includes SCP, which is a command-line oriented method of file transfer.
