Using SSH Secure Shell

Users can log in directly by using SSH to open a "shell" to that computer. Once the connection is established, users can issue commands to perform a wide variety of functions.

This page explains how to open a secure (SSH) shell connection.

1. Start the "SSH Secure Shell" program by selecting it from the Apple Menu, UOnet, SSH*, MacSSH menus**.
2. If the "Open Connection" window does not appear automatically, select "File" then "New Connection." Type "shell.uoregon.edu" in the "Host Name:" box. Remember to check the "Secure Shell v2..." checkbox.

3. You will need to enter your username and password to complete the connection. The username in this case is just the part of your email address before the '@'symbol. For example "jersmith"

4. You should now be logged in!

* Duckware 2001 labelled this menu "Telnet" yet included the same SSH v2 application (the rest should be the same).
** You need to use the Duckware to install SSH. SSH is a default application in the main Duckware installer.

Common Unix commands
Change password: passwd
List files: ls
Show disk quota: quota -v
Logout: lo
