Windows:
Outlook and Outlook Express -
- Open "Tools" -> "Accounts..." -> "Mail"
-> "Properties"-> "Advanced"
- Check the box under "incoming mail" labeled "this
server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
Note: Do not check the box for outgoing "SMTP"
Eudora 5.1 and Higher
- Eudora 5.1 will automatically use SSL if available. To verify the
setting, select Tools -> Options... -> Checking Mail -> "Required,
Alternate Port" Click on the button labelled "Last SSL
info" to see if you are using SSL.
- Note that Eudora versions prior to 5.1 lack SSL support.
Netscape 4 Mail (IMAP only) -
- Click "Edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Mail
and Newsgroups" -> "Servers" -> "IMAP"

- Check the box "use secure sockets layer (SSL) or TLS..."
Netscape 6 -
- Open "Edit" -> "Mail and News Account Settings"
-> "Server"
- Check the box labeled "use secure connections (SSL)"
Macintosh:
Outlook Express and Entourage -
- Open "Tools" -> "Accounts..." -> "Mail
Tab"
- Double-click the account listed (i.e., jersmith@gladstone.uoregon.edu)
- Go to the "receiving mail" section and click on the text
"click here for advanced receiving options"
- Check the box labeled "this POP/IMAP service requires a secure
connection (SSL)."
Eudora 5.1 and Higher
- Open the "Special" menu and select "Settings..."
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the configurable settings list,
and select the "SSL" item.
- Choose optional or required SSL for POP and IMAP from the drop-down
menus provided. Do not select SSL for SMTP.
- Note that Eudora versions prior to 5.1 lack SSL support.
Netscape Mail v. 4 -
- 1.Click "Edit" -> "Preferences"
- Select your account from the "Incoming Mail Servers" list
(i.e., jersmith@gladstone.uoregon.edu)
- Click "Edit" -> "IMAP" tab
- Check the box labeled "Use secure connections (SSL)."
Netscape 6 -
- Click "Edit" -> "Mail and News Account Settings"
-> "Server"
- Check the box labeled "Use secure connections (SSL)."
