What does it do?
- The Windows Security CD installs critical security updates and patches for Windows. The Security CD will also prompt you to update to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as needed.
- This CD contains a variety of virus repair tools that may be useful to those who have already been infected by a virus or worm.
More Specifically:
| * Checks for existing antivirus products |
* Makes simple checks for Sasser, Welchia, SoBigF and Blaster |
| * Enables firewall (XP and Win2K) |
* Offers to disable Messenger Service
(not related to instant messenger) |
| * Enables the Automatic Update feature of Windows Update |
* Offers to disable UPnP |
| * Checks critical patch status and installs patches as needed |
* Updates virus definitions for McAfee Viruscan and related products. Updates virus definitions for Norton Antivirus (retail and corporate) |
| * Runs Windows Update |
* Installs SpyBot for spyware prevention.
If Internet connected, checks for updates to the includes
(like antivirus definition files) and scans system for
spyware. |
* Checks for Mozilla/Firefox. If not present, offers to
install Firefox as alternate to IE (to avoid numerous
security issues with Microsoft's IE.) |
* Checks Firefox version if already present. Offers to update you to current version if yours is older. |
* Starts McAfee Viruscan scan (when Enterprise Edition present)
* Starts NAV scan (when NAV is present) |
* If your PC has Sun's Java installed (Java Runtime or other) then the script offers to open your default browser to Sun's update page at "http://www.java.com/en/download/" That page can update Java components, or congratulate the
user on being up to date. |
* Offers to delete your temporary files for you on the next restart via the "runonce" registry key and a custom application that actually
Deletes the files. The reason for the custom application is just to
Display a message for the user while the files are being deleted in the
even that it takes a long time. |

What it doesn't do:
- The Security CD is not an antivirus software replacement; it supplements the protection provided by Antivirus software by closing security holes in Windows, and automates the process of updating and scanning.
- Antivirus software and the Windows Security CD are two components of a larger Windows security effort.
If you have just purchased a new Windows PC we strongly encourage you to run the Windows Security CD before connecting your new computer to the internet for the first time. Some computer manufacturers ship computers with the original version of Windows XP. This version of Windows contains many critical security holes. If you connect your computer to the network before installing these critical patches your computer may be infected in a matter of seconds.
