Introduction: What follows is a subset (although not atypical) of the screens a user sees when running the UO Security CD. Most screens are only shown conditionally. For example, the script on the CD detects if you are online when you run it. If you are not online, then the Internet based update screens and actions are skipped automatically. The CD will still prompt you to update those programs and files it has on the CD with those versions. The CD also prompts the user to update certain programs when found on the user's PC if they are older than those found on the CD. For example, the CD will offer to update Spybot, Firefox, and Eudora when the user has older versions of those programs.
The Security CD autoplays when the user inserts it into the drive. A brief caption lets the user know something is happening before the Welcome screen appears.

The Welcome screen (below) gives you some basic information. See the end of this image group to see the "Netwok Disabled" and "Advanced" screenshots. Most folks simply click "Next>" through the process.
We ask everyone with XP to enable the Windows Firewall. We offer to enable a packet filter for Windows 2000 users via ipsecpol.

We ask everyone to enable automatic updates. This daily check for updates is set to run the same hour you run the CD.

We ask everyone to disable the messenger service, which is not related to instant messenger.

We encourage folks to disable universal plug and play, unless they are actually using it.

We prompt to run Windows Update.

We check for Virus definition version (Symantec and McAfee) and offer to update definitions as needed.

We check if the user has spybot installed. If not, we offer to install it for them. If it is already present, we check the includes version and offer to update.

When we invoke Spybot, we include the option to update the product online first (in the event more updates exist), before scanning.

We offer to delete temporary files which can be a hiding spot for some spyware, and is a good periodic practice to keep them from building up. Note this does not effect cached browser passwords and the like.

If we notice you have Java installed, we offer to send you to the java update site.

The completion message.
