The information in this handout pertains to version 1.5x of Eudora. A version of this handout updated for version 3.x of Eudora will be available shortly.

Eudora is an e-mail program that allows you to send and receive e-mail from your PC. To use Eudora, you must have an account on a campus timesharing computer, such as DARKWING, GLADSTONE, or OREGON. Your PC must be connected to UOnet, either directly (via a campus Ethernet network), or remotely, via a modem and networking package like Trumpet Winsock or Windows 95. In addition, you must have at least 500K RAM available on your hard drive to install Eudora.

*Getting a Copy of Eudora [Back to Top]

To obtain a copy of Eudora, either

  • Install Eudora from the Windows 95 or Windows 3.1 Network Application Installer. You can get a copy of this installer from the Duckware CD-ROM, by bringing a box of high density diskettes to the Microcomputer Support Center (151 McKenzie Hall, or you can checkout the disk set in the Computing Center Documents Room library (Room 205). Be sure to call ahead to the Documents Room (346-4406) to ask if they have Windows Network Application Installer disk sets available for checkout. You can also checkout copies of the Duckware CD-ROM in the Documents Room.

  • use the FTP client that comes with Windows and download Eudora from Qualcomm. To find the latest version of the free Eudora client for Windows go to the Web page listed below.

    http://eudora.qualcomm.com/eudoralight/

    *Installing Eudora [Back to Top]

The Network Applications Installer includes instructions for installing Eudora. The installer creates a Eudora directory and puts it in the following location:

  • Windows 95: Start/Programs/Network Applications
  • Windows 3.11: C:NET\WEUDORA

*Setting up Eudora [Back to Top]

Before using Eudora the first time, you'll need to set a few preferences.

Select "Settings" from the Special menu to bring up the Settings box. You'll see a scrollable set of icons on the left side of the box.

We suggest you leave settings that are already checked as they are.

    Personalize the following settings:

  • Type your e-mail address in the "POP Account" box, e.g.,

    jsmith@gladstone.uoregon.edu

  • Then type your full name in the "Real Name" box. It is displayed in all messages you send.

  • Click the "Checking Mail" icon and check "Leave mail on server." This option leaves your messages on your mail server (e.g., GLADSTONE) so you can access them from any computer.

  • Click the"Hosts" icon and type the address whois.uoregon.edu in the Ph box. This enables you to look up another person's e-mail address.
  • If you'd like Eudora to keep a copy of all the messages you send, scroll down to the"Sending Mail" icon, click it, and select "Keep copies of outgoing mail." Copies are stored in your "Out" mailbox.

*Creating and Sending Messages [Back to Top]

To create and send a new e-mail message,

      1. Display the Message menu and select "New Message."

      2. Enter the recipient's complete e-mail address at the "To:" prompt and press Tab.

      3. Enter the subject of the message at the "Subject:" prompt and press Tab.

      4. Enter your message and review it for accuracy.
      5. When you're finished, click "Send."

*Getting Your Mail [Back to Top]

You can check your mail by choosing "Check Mail..." from the File menu. If you do not have any new mail, Eudora notifies you in an announcement box. If you do have new mail, Eudora lists the messages in your "In" mailbox. Click a message once to select it and twice to display it.

Note: If you are an on-campus user, you may want to set up Eudora to automatically check for mail. You can specify a time interval in the &"Checking Mail" section of the Settings box.

*Processing Your Messages [Back to Top]

The five basic things you can do with a message once you've read it are outlined below. In each case, the action pertains to the message you are currently reading or the message that is currently selected in your list of messages.

Replying. If you want to reply to the message, display the Message menu and select "Reply." You'll see a new window, with the original sender's address in the"To:" field and the subject repeated. You'll also see the text of the message, with each line preceded by a ">". Delete whatever text you do not want to return to the original sender. Then, type your response below the message text and click "Send" when you're done to dispatch the reply.

Forwarding. If you want to forward the message, display the Message menu and select "Forward." You'll see a window with your address entered at the "From:" prompt. Type the e-mail address of the person you are forwarding the message to at the "To:" prompt. Again, the original message text is included, with a ">" at the beginning of each line. You can edit and add to this text, if you wish. Click "Send" when you're ready to forward the message.

Printing. To print the message on your local printer, display the "File" menu and select "Print."

Storing. When new messages arrive, Eudora places them in your "In" mailbox. If you wish to set up some other mailboxes, display the Windows menu, select "Mailboxes," and click "New." Then name the mailbox(es). The name(s) are added to the Mailbox menu. (You're also offered the option to "Make it a folder"--a folder being a collection of mailboxes. We suggest you avoid folders until you have more experience with Eudora). Click "OK" when you're done naming mailboxes.

To place the current message in an alternate mailbox, display the Transfer menu and select the mailbox, or create a new mailbox. To display an alternate mailbox, select it from the Mailbox menu.

Deleting. To delete the message, display the Message menu and select "Delete." This temporarily moves the message to a mailbox called "Trash." When you leave Eudora, the "Trash" mailbox is emptied. If you want to delete the message immediately, display the Special menu and select "Empty Trash."

      *Leaving Eudora [Back to Top]

When you're finished using Eudora, display the File menu and select "Exit."

*Other Features of Eudora [Back to Top]

Eudora allows you to do many other things that are not discussed here. For example, you can

    • queue messages to send later, or all at once

    • use Ph and Finger to locate unknown e-mail addresses and display other recipient information

    • reply to all of the senders of a message

    • send rejected messages again

    • create a personal "signature" for your messages

    • create nicknames for frequent correspondents

If you wish to learn about any of these features, or have other questions about Eudora, refer to the Eudora Version 1.5 User Manual, which you can find on Qualcomm's Web site at:

      http://eudora.qualcomm.com/eudoralight/

You can also access online help by displaying the Help menu and selecting "Contents."
