Windows 2000 Wireless Setup

Introduction

The only "trick" to setting up wireless is to set the network name (SSID) to "uowireless" then open a web browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer to login. Once you are authenticted, you should be able to use any network program. The steps below may not be exactly the same for your version of Windows and specific network card, but should give you a very close approximation of what you will see.

Configuration
Follow the steps below to configure your wireless card.

1) Open the "Control Panel" from the "Start" button and "Settings..." menus.

Control Panel menu

2) Open the "System" control panel.

System icon

3) Windows 2000/XP users need to click on the Hardware tab, then "Device Manager" button. Windows 98 will have a "Device Manager" tab instead of a button. The Windows XP picture is shown below.

4) Click on the "+" symbol next to "Network adapters" and double-click on the name of your wireless card. In the example below, you would double-click on the "Instant Wireless - Network PCI CARD" item. This might say Orinocco, Avaya, WaveLan, or Lucent if you have the Lucent brand wireless adapter.

5) Click on the Advanced tab to reveal a setting called "SSID" or "Network Name" in some cases. In the "Value:" field type "uowireless." Note that this part of the instruction can vary depending on the make and model of wireless card you have. You may have to search the menus for "SSID" or "Network Name"

6) Open a web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. If the following screen does not appear automatically, type "uowireless.uoregon.edu" into your browser's "Location:" or "Address:" field

Troubleshooting Tip: You may need to turn off proxy settings (for now) to make this work. To do this, open Internet Explorer and select "Internet Options" from the "Tools..." menu. Click on the "Connections" tab, then the "LAN Settings..." button. Uncheck all of the boxes that appear on that screen, especially "autodetect settings". Finally, click on the "UOnet Authentication" link.

(The following images were borrowed from the Macintosh documentation. The Windows version of Internet Explorer will look slightly different, but the content inside the frame should be identical.)

7) Type in your email address in the "Username:" field, and corresponding password in the "Password:" field.

8) If successful you will see the following message:

9) Open any network program you like, or click on the home button in your browser to begin accessing the web.
